Cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract makes up about 4% of new cancer diagnoses each year.  These tumors often require multi-modality treatment which may include surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.  Dr. Thomason and Dr. Zhou both have broad experiences in the surgical treatment of head and neck cancer.

Risk factors for head and neck cancer include tobacco and alcohol use.  Symptoms may include a lump in the neck, a sore throat that won’t go away, prolonged hoarseness, weight loss, or bringing up blood from the throat.  Patients with these symptoms should obtain a thorough head and neck examination.

Removal of a portion or all of the thyroid gland may be necessary for benign or malignant thyroid nodules and in some other thyroid diseases.

Risk factors for thyroid cancer include a family history of thyroid cancer and a history of radiation exposure.  Symptoms may include a lump in the thyroid or hoarseness.  When a thyroid nodule is found, tests may need to be performed to determine if the nodule is cancerous.
